Winter Mulching: 5 Reasons You Should Be Mulching Your Garden Now

Since April showers bring May flowers, not to mention weeds, a lot of people think they only need to mulch in the spring. However, mulching in the winter can be equally beneficial.

Winter mulching offers something for even the most novice of gardeners. Read on to learn five reasons why you should mulch before cold weather sets in.

Boost Root Hydration

Humidity levels are low during the winter, which means if the roots of plants aren’t protected, they can dry out. Mulching in the winter gives your garden and plants are extra layer of insulation, which keep roots moist and aids in growth once the ground thaws.

Less Work in the Spring

Winter mulching also lightens the work load in the spring. Instead of having to re-mulch everything once it starts to warm up, you’re able to simply add fresh mulch where your garden needs it the most. Keep in mind your mulching efforts don’t have to be limited to only your garden. You can add mulch around trees, shrubs and any other permanent types of plants. If in doubt, you can also ask a mulch supplier about the best types for your plants and area you live in.

Avoid Heaving

During the winter, the ground is constantly in a state of freezing or thawing. When this happens, the ground contracts and expands and plant roots can become loose, which pushes the plants and its roots towards surface level. Once the roots are exposed to freezing temperatures, most plants die. They likely won’t be salvageable by the time it warms up. Using mulch in the winter helps prevent the shift and keep plant roots deep in the soil.

Moderates Temperature

Depending on where you live, the temperatures may fluctuate on a daily basis. Adding an extra layer of mulch can help all of your plants maintain the right temperature. You might not experience major spikes or drops in the temperature in your area, but even slight fluctuations can kill delicate plant life.

Boost Aesthetics

Finally, adding an extra blanket of mulch can do wonders for your curb appeal. During the warmer months, the mulch you laid in the spring can take a beating. Refreshing your mulch also boosts the resale value of your home, if you’re looking to sell.

As we get closer to winter, now’s the time to prep your yard for possibly harsh conditions. Take the time to mulch prior to the first freeze and reap the rewards in the spring.
